Over the past month, we have had a lot of wonderful news from the AAPI community. Here are some highlights.
Surprise! Our 2020 Nevada Factsheet is out.
We are hard at work finalizing our state factsheets. In advance of the Democratic debates and the Nevada Caucus, we are releasing our latest factsheet on AAPIs in the state of Nevada.
For now, you can see the rest of our 2018 Factsheets here. For any media requests regarding 2020 state data, please email jbaik@apiavote.org.
The Iowa Caucus
We saw an incredible turnout from the AAPI community in Iowa. Particularly from the Karen community, who had 180 members of the community participate in the Iowa caucus.
After a caucus training held by our partner Iowa Asian Alliance and APIAVote, participant and community member Mona Aye said “The caucus training helped me understand the caucus process step by step, especially, the Democratic caucus.”
“This is my first time going to a caucus as a trained volunteer,” she continued, “and the training provided by Iowa Asian alliance was very helpful for me to understand the caucus process and get comfortable interpreting the whole process for my community, during the caucus night. I am thankful for the right to vote and extremely proud to see 90% of my community from Burma, at my precinct who are new voters.” We were told that 99% of these voters were first-time caucus-goers.
#AAPI 2020 Twitter Town Hall
Last Thursday, APIAVote will be co-hosted Twitter townhall with various democratic presidential campaigns.
The event featured the presidential campaigns of Vice President Joe Biden, Senator Bernie Sanders, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Senator Amy Klobuchar, Representative Tulsi Gabbard, Mayor Mike Bloomberg, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, and Tom Steyer. The event featured questions asking what they will do to empower the AAPI community.
In partnership with NBC Asian America, AAPI Data, the National Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA), and the Asian American Journalist Association (AAJA), the Town Hall garnered over 8,000 tweets surrounding the event and hit #3 Trending in Politics. We were excited to see thousands of community members come out and engage with these responses and we hope the event was informative to everyone who participated. Earlier that day, Senator Elizabeth Warren’s campaign also released her AAPI Platform.
If you missed the town hall, you can see a few moments here and here. See NBC’s recap of the event here.

In The News: Census and the Asian American Vote
In recent times, we have also had our work and our partners highlighted in the news!
- In light of conducting almost 40 census trainings this past summer and fall, The New York Times wrote about why Asian Americans are critical to the upcoming census count and highlighted one of our longtime partners and friend, Alice Yi.
- Executive Director of APIAVote, Christine Chen, went on NPR to talk about the importance of the AAPI vote and the impact of Andrew Yang’s presidential run.
- What about Asian American women voters? Zora magazine covered this important segment of voters and highlighted the key issues AAPIs care about.
- Asian voters in Nevada are a big deal. CNN highlights Nevada’s growing AAPI and Filipino population and mentions the popular annual Night Market put on by our partner Asian Community Development Service. Also, in advance of the Nevada Caucuses, we have released our 2020 Nevada Fact Sheet (the rest coming soon).
