‘CRAZY RICH ASIANS’ STARS CONSTANCE WU AND JIMMY O. YANG ENCOURAGE ASIAN-AMERICANS TO VOTE WITH NEW PSA
LOS ANGELES (Oct. 31, 2018) – “Crazy Rich Asians” stars Constance Wu and Jimmy O. Yang have partnered with New Virginia Majority and We Stand United in releasing a new, nonpartisan PSA encouraging Americans, particularly the Asian-American community, to vote in the upcoming midterm elections on Nov. 6, 2018.
In the entertaining video, released one week before the election, Wu and Yang point to the fact that Asian-Americans voters are not all voting. They call on Asian-Americans to make their voices heard by getting out to vote this Nov. 6 in the midterm elections. They provide a voting hotline number (888-API-VOTE) at the end of the PSA where bilingual assistance is available in English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Urdu, Hindi, and Bengali.
“Asian-American and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) are the fastest growing demographic in Virginia and across the nation, yet we rarely see ourselves reflected in government or other institutions of power,” said Tram Nguyen, co-executive director of New Virginia Majority. “In this moment where immigrant communities of color are targeted by those in power, it is imperative that we organize and realize the power of our vote. Whether our roots are from Vietnam, China, or India, we are a critical mass of diverse voices that change the landscape, not just in Hollywood, but through the halls of Washington, Richmond, and capitals across the nation.”
Stephanie Cho, Executive Director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Atlanta, said, “2018 has been a big year for AAPI media representation – across the nation, we’re becoming more visible, influential, and proud. We’re creating spaces for ourselves, our people, and our stories, and we’re taking control of our narratives and identities. But the battle for representation can’t end there. This fall, we have the incredible opportunity of making sure that our communities’ voices are represented not only in the media, but in the way our nation and our people are governed. And all we have to do is get out and vote.”
Christine Chen, Executive Director of APIAVote, said, “Our families endured many hardships to come to the United States for its freedom and opportunity. Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) can honor their family’s legacy and sacrifice by voting on November 6. APIAVote’s 2018 Asian American Voter Survey found that financial security, quality healthcare, good public schools, and safety from gun violence are the top issues motivating AAPI voters in this midterm election. To ensure their voices are heard, APIAVote and our partners are calling hundreds of thousands of voters to help them make their plans to vote and honor family’s legacy and sacrifice.”
