Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote’s Statement in Support of Nevada Having the First Democratic Presidential Primary in 2024

Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote (APIAVote) is the nation’s leading nonpartisan nonprofit dedicated to engaging, educating, and empowering Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. Since 2007, APIAVote has worked to ensure AAPIs are represented and heard. That is why APIAVote strongly supports Nevada in its bid to host the first Democratic presidential primary in 2024 and beyond.

Nevada is a microcosm of the diversifying nation as a whole. According to the U.S. Census Department’s Diversity Index, Nevada is the most diverse state among those vying to become the first in the nation for the Democratic presidential primary.

Nationally, just prior to the midterm elections, more than two-thirds of registered Asian Americans said they planned to vote, but only about half had been contacted by either of the major parties, according to the Asian American Voter Survey. Having the first presidential primary in Nevada, with its diverse racial composition, would provide a more representative picture of the nation’s pulse and would compel candidates to reach out to AAPI communities and other historically marginalized communities, to listen to and better address their needs and concerns. Such attention from the candidates will also serve to engage and motivate all voters to participate in the electoral process.
